Chetwoods’ masterplan creates a high quality sustainable community providing low cost homes and regenerating a run down quarter of Southampton in a socially responsible manner. Stakeholder and public consultation played a significant part in the development of the scheme which is seen as a catalyst for a sustainable development zone to the east of the city centre.
The design re-establishes the historic urban grain of St Mary’s and ensures a series of well defined public and private realm streets and spaces. The three residential blocks have a compact footprint which provides good permeability and connectivity with adjacent areas. The development includes 174 dwellings, 37% of which are affordable housing in a mix of one and two bedroom flats, maisonettes and town houses over three perimeter blocks surrounding communal courtyards.
Chetwoods also acted as architect on the eastern portion of the project. To ensure that the design quality of the scheme was retained from start to finish Chetwoods convinced the client team to finance detailed design work prior to tendering for the construction works. The contractor was then able to price its tender accurately at the outset of the project.
