2014 - Selected as one of The Twentieth Century Society’s 100 Buildings for 100 Years.
Chetwoods have worked with Sainsbury’s for over twenty years, providing innovative solutions for new stores, extensions and mixed-use developments throughout the country.
Environmental innovations now featuring throughout Sainsbury’s portfolio stem from an initial four year commission to explore environmental sustainability in superstore design. This led to the Sainsbury’s Millennium Greenwich store which represented a watershed in supermarket design.
When it opened, the store scored the highest ever official environmental rating for a retail building with a perfect 31 out of 31 points, and was the first store to be awarded an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating.
Key design features of this pioneering building include a north-lit sales area creating a comfortable market environment; under floor heating, cooling and passive ventilation; earth sheltering, bore holes feeding CHP plant via the London aquifer and an annual saving in energy usage.
The low energy design also incorporates photovoltaics, wind turbines and recycled materials throughout and many of its innovative features are now being replicated throughout the world.
The building’s innovation and architectural merit were recognised through a number of awards, including:
• Shortlisting for the Stirling Prize
• The Design Council Millennium Product
• RIBA Journal Sustainability Award winner
• RIBA Regional Award 2000 winner
• The Design Museum’s Design Sense Award
• Retail Week Store Design of the Year 2000
• Channel 4 Building of the Year People’s Choice 2000
