Sutton Park Outdoor Education Centre, Birmingham

This project for Birmingham City Council Youth Services was intended to be a focal point for youth provision in Sutton Park, which is currently classed as a national nature reserve.

The project involved an extension to an existing youth centre constructed in the late 1970s. The new-build element was to bridge the existing and minimise the impact on its context, by provision of a single storey extension building using lightweight and durable materials such as western redwood cedar and self-coloured renders. The scheme also utilises natural ventilation and daylight via use of sun pipes.

The facility provided a range of activities including education classrooms, changing facilities, drying facilities for outdoor pursuits and staff facilities. The project also included provision for upgrading existing car parking facilities and a new ground floor entrance area to the existing youth centre at ground floor.

Chetwoods worked on this project, as well as the MAC Midlands Arts Centre and Sutton New Road, as members of the Birmingham City Partnership.
