“This is absolutely one of the best schemes I have seen for a long time and it’s entirely within the Government's policies of urban renaissance and reviving our town centre”. Nick Raynsford (The then Minister for London)

The Brewery, Romford

A 600,000 ft2 £180 million in-town mixed use development on the site of the Star Brewery which was closed in 1993. The scheme features food and non-food retail, a 24 screen cinema, health club, surface and multi storey car parking for 1700 cars, restaurants, Europe’s largest indoor play area and bowling centre.

Chetwoods also undertook the masterplanning of the adjacent housing development and its link to the centre.

The design development focused on place-making and the integration of linkage through the scheme as an extension of Romford’s existing retail heart. Sustainable renaissance was the key aim of the development which respected the history of the site and its former use. A 50m high chimney was repaired, reclad and utilised as a landmark beacon for the scheme. It also acts as a fulcrum for a wrap around spiralling sculpture doubling as the car park ramp.
