We were asked to develop a concept for a state-of-the-art film studio in Hyderabad, India, including six film studios and associated facility rooms, TV studios, outdoor studios, food courts, an event arena, and deluxe villas.

Key drivers of the design developed by our teams were to provide flexibility of use and the possibility to expand, green building concepts that responded to the local climate, consideration of access and servicing, noise mitigation, and analysis of the context of the site within the wider land profile.

The layout of the masterplan catered for large vehicle access for deliveries into a multi-function space that would provide a background access and support area to the film stages where sets, props and equipment would be held ready for use and actors could wait.

Stages of varied adjustable sizes and heights were separated to prevent noise transmission and accessed by large sliding or roller shutter doors that would have lobbies for noise segregation.

Ancillary facilities provided included offices, cutting rooms, ADR facilities, screening and preview theatres, dressing rooms and costume, make-up and hair studios, rehearsal spaces, green rooms and other technical and post-production facilities. These would be constructed with a modular system to optimise their flexibility and adaptability.

The location and design of the studio café, restaurant and recreational spaces were a key consideration in reflection of the importance placed on staff, performer and visitor wellbeing.

Our approach to this project drew on our extensive experience across a range of sectors including sustainable logistics and warehouse design and our previous work on residential, hospitality and masterplanning projects, and cultural and arts centres.

Studio provider, Croga Studio Builds, also worked on the project.
