A £1bn scheme for the City of London Corporation for the relocation of Billingsgate and Smithfield wholesale markets to the site of the former Barking Reach power station, a brownfield site at Dagenham Dock which forms part of the Barking Riverside Opportunity Area.

The project will regenerate 42 acres of industrial land into the UK’s largest wholesale food market, stimulating the local economy and ensuring resilience in the food supply of London and the South East.

The scheme will bring the markets together to a single site in London, creating a new food hub destination whilst securing their future. As well as creating modern facilities for market tenants within an exemplary sustainable design, the plans also include a new food training school, which will offer training and education to future market traders and the local community in Barking and Dagenham.

Following outline planning consent, the Court of Common Council – the City of London Corporation’s principal decision-making body – has deposited a private bill in Parliament to seek approval to relocate the markets out of central London.
