The concept behind the redevelopment of the MAC (Midlands Arts Centre) was to stitch the existing pavilion buildings together with a new three-storey central linking structure using environmental initiatives to enhance the energy performance of the building.

The old MAC consisted of badly-lit spaces that were difficult to navigate and were virtually inaccessible to anyone with disabilities. The new structure created a light and flexible space with improved access throughout and provided a link between the existing pavilions and new public circulation routes.

Access from the adjacent Cannons Hill Park was improved with a new bridge link serving a new entrance and reception. New performance spaces, exhibition halls and an enlarged catering facility were created, combining new and re-used spaces to form a lively, light and environmentally responsive modern facility.

The centre was shortlisted for a Civic Trust Award for its contribution to the arts and wider communities.
