We are honoured that Huangmugang Station in Shenzhen – an interior design project that Chetwoods contributed to in collaboration with Jiang & Associates Design (J&A) for Shenzhen Metro Group, has won the Golden Bund Award for Best Public Space Design – Gold Award.

The award, which was entered by J&A, is regarded as one of the most prestigious awards for interior design in China, promoting the continuous development of standards within the design industry.

The minimalist architectural design of Huangmugang station needed a sensitive interior design approach applied with a light touch. J&A and Chetwoods worked together and developed the concept of utilising lighting as the main driving factor in shaping a cohesive scheme around the theme of ‘sunshine and a happy life under the trees’, to create interior spaces that give station users a pleasant travel experience while stimulating their senses.

The design of the interior created the sense of sunlight and planting beneath the ground. The concept of ‘light pouring through the leaves of trees’ was articulated by J&A and Chetwoods, with a well-arranged atrium that varies in form and pattern. The introduction of light louvers balances and manages levels of natural light and artificial light, with the natural lighting allowing the underground space to feel open and bright. The louvres change angles and shapes, adjusting light levels by day and night, while managing temperature levels in the space, and delivering energy savings and emissions reduction.

Public art was incorporated at key circulation intersections throughout the station. Materials, textures, and colours were all carefully selected by J&A, Chetwoods, China Railway Construction Group and Nikken to complement and enhance the minimalist design of the station’s architecture, highlighting the use of natural textures, while expressing the design language of the integration between the station’s architecture and its interior spaces.

J&A led the overall design of the project, including implementation and management. We were appointed on the project to work collaboratively with them and undertake the schematic design and cultural and artistic inspiration of the build.

Chetwoods’ design team was led by our Chairman Laurie Chetwood, and one of our Directors, Reza Esmaeeli, who heads our office in Guangzhou. Chetwoods has been designing projects in China for over 10 years, with Anny Fan as Chetwoods’ Head of Chinese Business Development, who is a specialist in the management of architecture and design projects between the UK and China. Maren Klasing, Lead Designer, and Hugo Lainz, Project Architect, also contributed to the design.

In addition to our collaboration with Jiang & Associates Design (J&A) on imaginative designs for metro hubs across China, Chetwoods’ recent projects include an urban plaza for the United Nations Biological Diversity Convention (COP 15), a masterplan for Wuhan International Eco-Logistics Park, and our Mars Farm project in collaboration with Creativersal International.
